Track expenses by voice on iPhone

With TrackExpenses Pro, you can say an expense or several purchases and review the resulting drafts before saving. Voice processing runs on your device, with availability depending on your iPhone or iPad, supported speech models and language.

Try built-in dictation for a small manual log

An iPhone can dictate text into Notes using the keyboard microphone. For a simple record, say the date, what you bought and the amount, then check the resulting text. This is useful when you want a written note and do not need categories, accounts or running totals.

A dictated note is still text. You must organize the values and calculate totals yourself, or copy them into a spreadsheet. An expense app's voice workflow adds a second step: it interprets the sentence into transaction fields. That makes review more important, because an incorrectly understood number now affects a total rather than merely appearing as a typo in a note.

Say the amount and what it was for

Open the voice-entry screen in TrackExpenses and start with a short, explicit sentence. For example, “coffee 15 with cash” tells the app what you bought, the amount and an account type. “Groceries 120 at Carrefour yesterday” adds a merchant and a date. These are illustrative amounts in your chosen currency, not subscription prices.

Speak in the way you normally would, but include the number. A merchant name alone cannot tell the app what you paid. Watch the live transcript and the fields the screen recognizes. If the amount is missing, say it clearly before finishing. If a category or account was inferred from your saved history, check that it is the one you intended.

On a supported speech path, recording finishes after a pause once you have completed the sentence. You can then inspect the draft. Do not interpret a progress indicator or a recognized phrase as proof that the entry has been saved; the confirmation step is where the draft becomes a ledger record.

Log several purchases in one sentence

A sentence such as “coffee 15, taxi 40 and groceries 120 at Carrefour yesterday” can produce three drafts. The example totals 175, so the saved rows should add up to that amount if all three are expenses in the same currency. Review each draft independently rather than checking only the first card.

Shared information can apply to several purchases. Saying a date or account once may be enough for the whole list when the sentence is unambiguous. Mixed directions need greater care: “salary 3000 and coffee 15” describes income and spending, not two expenses. If the app splits a sentence differently from the way you intended, correct the drafts or use manual entry instead of saving a confusing set.

For a longer list, a few short batches are easier to verify than a full day's purchases in one breath. The goal is less typing while keeping control of the record. Voice is especially useful for cash purchases that never produce a bank alert, or for catching up on several entries while the details are still fresh.

Check five fields before saving

First check the amount, including a spoken decimal. Fifteen and fifty differ by only a sound and produce very different monthly totals. Then check whether the draft is an expense, income or transfer. Next verify the currency: a shop's name or location does not reliably identify the currency you used.

Check the account and date as well. An account word such as “card” may be ambiguous if you have several cards. “Yesterday” refers to the day before the recording, while an older purchase needs a more explicit date. The draft remains editable so these choices are yours. Use the full entry screen when a transaction needs detail that is easier to select than to describe aloud.

If you name a foreign currency, verify the conversion rate before saving. TrackExpenses does not make a shop's nationality into an exchange-rate decision. A familiar merchant may suggest an account or category from your past entries, but that suggestion cannot know that you paid differently today.

Understand device and language support

The interface is in English. Voice entry understands English and Arabic on compatible devices, while actual speech-model availability depends on hardware and language support. Some devices use newer on-device speech and Apple Intelligence capabilities; other supported systems use the app's rules for interpreting a transcript. These paths may differ in the detail they can infer.

Do not choose Pro solely on the assumption that any sentence in any language will work on every device. Check the voice screen's availability and language information on your own phone. Initial speech-model preparation may need a download. For troubleshooting, note your device, iOS version and selected language when contacting support; do not send private audio or a full ledger.

Privacy and other quick-entry choices

TrackExpenses' voice workflow streams audio to Apple's on-device recognition and does not save an audio file or upload recordings to the developer. The ledger stores the confirmed transaction, not the recording. Purchases and optional private iCloud sync have their own data flows, described in the privacy policy.

Voice is a Pro feature. Unlimited manual entries remain free, and you can paste a supported bank message to fill a draft without speaking. Optional SMS automation can help with card purchases, while voice helps with cash and the expenses that no alert describes. Neither path replaces the need to check unfamiliar or ambiguous entries.

Frequently asked questions

Does speaking immediately save a transaction? No. Voice produces drafts for you to review and confirm.

Can I say more than one purchase? Yes. Include the amounts and check each resulting draft.

Is the app interface Arabic? No. The current interface is English; supported voice and message reading can understand Arabic.
